Raised in Michigan around birch trees, Deb has been weaving since 1982. When she moved to the Pacific NW she started using natural materials that were traditional to the area, including Western Red and Yellow Cedar bark and materials from her yard for her latest work. Deb loves the diversity found in basketry and enjoys exploring the techniques and forms of basketweaving. She creates contemporary baskets linking traditional materials with tapestry weaving, beading, stitching and surface design. By combining a variety of fiber techniques in one vessel that uses basketry materials, Deb creates “new baskets”. By blending colors and textures, she changes the character of the basket from only a functional vessel to a container that expresses a concept. Deb strives to show that there is beauty in tradition and purpose to contemporary basketry.
